UN:Me: An Cerebral Horror Merging Silent Hill with Social Deduction Gameplay

The latest Day of the Devs digital showcase revealed a number of intriguing upcoming titles, but one in particular has seized the imagination: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo adventure seems to fuse together the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill title with the suspicion-driven core of Among Us.

"This is a distinctive experience where a young woman harboring several personalities within her must escape from a labyrinth of the mind," explains developer Yasukazu Kawai.

Stepping Into a Fractured Consciousness

In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed female protagonist who appears to be of high school age. Within her exist four separate personas, each with their own fears and motivations. These entities can seize control spontaneously, releasing their deep-seated phobias upon her suddenly.

Judging by revealed footage, much of the narrative unfolds within a creepy medical facility, though other scenes depict the main character navigating a desolate church.

A World of Individual Horror

"What are you fearful of? What causes you uneasy?" poses creative lead Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Small rooms. People in power. Elements that seem trivial to others can trigger a deep instinct within us. This game delves into that idea — fears that are unique to each person."

The core mechanic involves managing whichever soul emerges at a particular time. However, these identities will switch involuntarily during gameplay. During exploration, every persona's fears become amplified and assault the girl in succession. When the soul changes, so does the particular terror the player experiences.

Unsettling Visuals and a Deadly Choice

Initially, UN:Me shares noticeable visual similarities with the Silent Hill franchise. The setting is populated by orderlies all sporting the same face, with unnervingly wide grins. Patients in the waiting room have enormous flowers where their heads are. Floral motifs are a recurring theme, juxtaposing natural beauty with unnatural horror.

Yet, UN:Me introduces a singular mechanic. Players must determine which of the four souls inhabiting the heroine is the "real" one. "Each of the personas claims that the body is rightfully them," notes a creator. "During the game, you must determine who is real."

Once players believes a persona is fake, they must eliminate it. However, because every entity can deceive or obfuscate the reality, it is incredibly simple to choose incorrectly.

"Maybe you've already destroyed the real [soul] by your own actions," a voice suggests. "The last one standing might be a fraud. Either way, your choices are irreversible."

UN:Me does not yet have a publicly announced release date, but it is available to wishlist on digital storefronts.
