The New Animated Series' Opening Sequence Chose the Incorrect Critical Role Track
This latest animated series, the newest animated series from the beloved role-playing group, revealed an exciting opening credits. It features our favorite cast of misfits, misfits, and rogues kicking ass and making their mark, while also hinting at multiple heart-wrenching personal histories for characters such as Liam O'Brien's wizard Caleb, and Travis Willingham's warlock orc, the character Fjord.
Overall, the opening looks amazing. But I couldn't help feeling that an element was lost in the music selection.
The intro uses "Welcome to Wildemount", an exceptional composition composed by producer and singer Colm McGuinness. It's a track from the official score of the same name, the second one released by the production company's music division their music brand. It's a wonderful nostalgic choice, and I believe that fans of the sequel series will appreciate its inclusion.
Personally, The series' opening fails to capture the excitement and energy that accompanied the show's live-play sessions. "Your Turn to Roll", composed by musician Jason Charles Miller, became an immediate hit for me when it was initially unveiled in 2015, and it improved further when co-founder the performer added lyrics to the melody for the animated Campaign 2 opening in the later year.
Including singing from one actress, another performer, a co-star, as well as the writer, the song was catchy and enjoyable. Back then, I hadn't seen the second campaign at that point, but it was so infectious that I still saved it on my phone. It's a song that knows how to get you pumped before you start an episode of fantasy hijinks.
The Mighty Nein's intro with "Welcome to Wildemount" doesn't strike the right notes in my opinion. It's a grand piece of music, but based on my understanding of this party, I feel that its tone is a little off.
Of course, the creators has stated that the series will have a few changes and variations from the actual-play campaign. A tonal change for its opening seems to be one of them.
This animated adventure will be released on the streaming service from November 19. If you can't wait until then, or wish to prepare to learn about the characters of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the actual play are available on the audio platform and YouTube.
