The Legendary Jimmy Cliff, Reggae Legend and Cultural Figure, Dies at 81 Years Old
Global audiences grieves the passing of the iconic Jimmy Cliff, the celebrated Jamaican musician and performer whose distinctive vocal talent was instrumental in popularizing reggae music across the globe. He has died at the age of 81.
“It’s with profound sadness that I share that my beloved husband, Jimmy Cliff, has passed away due to a seizure episode followed by pneumonia,” wrote his wife Latifa Chambers on social media. “I am thankful for his loved ones, friends, peers in the arts and coworkers who walked with him on his journey. To all his fans globally, please know that your encouragement was his motivation throughout his whole career … Jimmy, my darling, may you rest in peace. I will honor your wishes.” The message was co-signed by their offspring, their son and daughter.
Jimmy Cliff gained fame for hit songs including You Can Get It If You Really Want, I Can See Clearly Now and “Wonderful World, Beautiful People”. His upbeat sound and positive spirit earned him a large and loyal fanbase.
Beyond his musical accomplishments, Cliff took the lead role in the 1972’s crime drama The Harder They Come, a role that received critical praise and is viewed as a cornerstone of film in Jamaica.
He is among the select few of artists, including Bob Marley and others, to be awarded the esteemed Jamaican Order of Merit.
