The Details Known About the Those Lost of the Bondi Terrorist Incident
No fewer than 16 individuals lost their lives and over 40 were wounded when gunmen opened fire at a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach, an incident local authorities have called a terrorist attack.
According to the most recent information, authorities have confirmed the number of fatalities remains at 16, including one of the alleged attackers. Furthermore, 42 wounded individuals were taken to hospital.
The victims are still awaiting formally identified, but investigators think their ages are between 10 and 87 years of age.
Here are the individuals who have been identified so far.
Eli Schlanger
Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.
Known as a father of five children, he worked as the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and acquaintances described him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.
“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a family member said.
Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their youngest child just a few months ago.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman also lost his life, according to his wife.
She told the events leading up to the shooting, stating they had been standing together when the gunfire erupted. “He shielded me because he wished to be near me,” she recalled.
The couple were both survivors of the Holocaust, having endured immense hardship in their childhood. They had later immigrated to Australia from Ukraine.
Dan Elkayam
French authorities have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is a casualty.
Publicly, the Foreign Minister expressed that France shared the grief of his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This cowardly attack is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must put a stop to,” the message read.
One Child
A 10-year-old girl who was taken to the a children's hospital succumbed to her injuries, police have confirmed.
One Israeli Citizen
One victim from Israel was a fatality in the incident, according to reports citing the Israeli foreign ministry.
Those Injured
From the 42 people transported to hospitals, many are still under care, with a number in serious condition. Those hurt include two officers who responded to the attack.
One of the injured is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to confront one of the gunmen. Called a hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is recovering well in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. It has been reported he was injured and underwent treatment in hospital.
In a message, he described the incident as an “horrific scene,” but also praised the response of those who rushed to help. He said he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the shooting. He said he listened to “a large number” of shots.
“I thought it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
