Prison Shock: The Ex-President Jair Bolsonaro Faces Life Behind Bars

He battled the legal system and justice prevailed.

Sixty days after getting a quarter-century plus sentence for seeking to “eradicate” Brazil’s political system, former president Jair Bolsonaro now looks headed to prison.

Expected Jailing

The adjudicated coup-monger – who has been subject to home confinement in his estate while a set of court processes and petitions unfold – is widely expected to be jailed in the next few days, amid mounting talk that he will be sent to a well-known top-security prison.

Previous Remarks on Prisoners

During Bolsonaro’s long political career, the conservative ex- paratrooper showed little mercy for the country's prison population.

“For what reason must we offer those dirtbags a easy time?” he once pondered. “They should just get messed, period. That’s what I reckon.”

At another time, Bolsonaro proclaimed: “Unless you desire to end up there, you simply need is to avoid sexual assault, abduction or rob.”

Jail Location Speculation

But the prospect of Bolsonaro himself winding up in the Papuda maximum security prison in Brasília has appalled allies, four of whom this week inspected the complex in an apparent attempt to discourage the high court from transferring him there.

The senator, a politician from Bolsonaro’s political party who was part of that quartet, stated he expected the 70-year-old politician to be jailed in the coming fortnight and was concerned his assigned prison could be Papuda.

He asserted Bolsonaro’s severe digestive ailments – the outcome of a life-threatening stabbing during the 2018 presidential presidential campaign – implied it would be dangerous to keep the former president there. “His health is extremely serious. He will not be able to manage if they send him to Papuda … It could be awful,” said the senator, who also expressed concern about cramped cells and the quality of inmate food.

While visiting Papuda, Lucas remembered observing cells holding forty prisoners: “It's almost one square meter per detainee.

“We talked to the inmates and they grumble, naturally, of the awful cuisine,” continued the senator.

Backers Voice Concerns

Lucas is not the only voice speaking out prior to the former president’s expected incarceration.

Writing in a major daily, a different supporter, the ex- cabinet member Fábio Wajngarten, deplored the “severe” end to Bolsonaro’s “impeccable” political career and claimed Brazil was about to witness “the biggest unfairness in its record”.

“This is an injustice that eats away the souls of countless of Brazilians,” Wajngarten wrote.

Varied Public Reaction

It is possibly true given the significant support Bolsonaro retains on the conservative side. However his expected imprisonment has also gladdened the hearts of many others who believe he ought to be incarcerated for conspiring to prevent the incoming president from becoming president – and additionally conspiring to have him murdered.

Reimont Otoni, a politician for the current leader's Workers’ party, commented: “No one desires Bolsonaro to be put in a dungeon. Not a soul wishes Bolsonaro to be put in solitary confinement. Nobody wants Bolsonaro to lack food or for him to have to lie on concrete. We want him to receive proper handling – but dignified care while incarcerated. He must not persist being his self-appointed guard for his whole life.”

He observed how Bolsonaro supporters, who have long applauding the tough conditions of inmates, had suddenly woken up to their rights. “Recently has the conservative fringe – which has repeatedly asserted that civil liberties should not be for offenders – opted to visit a jail to learn what circumstances are truly like,” he remarked.

“He is a offender,” Otoni insisted, but that did not mean he earned “humiliating, degrading conduct”.

Possible Prison Conditions

In spite of talk that Bolsonaro could be transferred to Papuda, which now contains about thousands of prisoners, his probable assigned facility looks to be a adjacent prison for law enforcement and other “special” prisoners called Papudinha (Little Papuda).

The accommodations are much more adequate than those in the larger jail, although nonetheless a world away from the comfort Bolsonaro had while residing in the impressive presidential palace, around 20 kilometers away.

According to reports, the cell Bolsonaro could anticipate occupy in Papudinha measures about 24 sq metres – about the dimensions of two parking spaces – and features a 130 square foot bathroom with a bathing area and a 130 square foot veranda. “The ex-president might be authorized to have a set and also a minibar in his cell as long as they were supplied by his relatives,” information suggested.

Ideological Comments

Senator Lucas criticized the talked-about idea to send the ex-president to Papuda as “a type of revenge” on the part of the supreme court judge who oversaw Bolsonaro’s legal case and will determine his future in the {
