President Trump Invites Families of Injured National Guard Members to the Presidential Residence
President Trump stated on Sunday that he has invited the family of a National Guard member tragically killed last week to come to the executive mansion.
He added that he spoke to her family and they were “devastated”.
Background on the Tragic Incident
Soldier Sarah Beckstrom, twenty years old, was fatally shot in a violent incident on Wednesday in Washington DC.
Her fellow service member, Staff Sgt Andrew Wolfe, twenty-four years old, remains hospitalized in grave state.
Vigils across the state have been held in their honor.
White House Offer
The commander-in-chief explained he’s discussed a meeting at the presidential residence for the families of both members of the West Virginia National Guard.
“I stated: ‘When you’re able, because that’s a difficult moment, come to the White House. We’re going to recognize her,” the president informed reporters. “And in the same way with him, no matter the outcome.”
Public Response
Community members came together over the past few days at Webster County high school in West Virginia to pay respects to Sarah.
Both they had been serving with the state guard as part of the president’s government program to aid law enforcement in Washington DC.
Remembering the Soldier
“She was the individual that educators desired. She conducted herself with inner fortitude, a bright grin and a positive energy that inspired people around her,” the principal, the leader of Beckstrom’s former high school, told the media. “She was kind, compassionate and always eager to help others.”
Memorial plans for Beckstrom are yet to be finalized.
Judicial Steps and Policy Revisions
Authorities have accused a twenty-nine-year-old suspect with one count of murder and two counts of attempted murder while armed.
The event prompted the government to pause asylum applications and halt issuing visas to owners of Afghan passports.
Condition of Wolfe
Wolfe, a resident of Martinsburg, enlisted in early 2019 and is a 2019 graduate of his local high school, per the Associated Press.
He is still undergoing care and is “fighting for his life”, the state’s governor Patrick Morrisey stated on Fox News Channel’s The Sunday Briefing.
The state’s top lawyer Bondi stated on Fox News Sunday that she planned to speak to his relatives.
Legacy of Sarah Beckstrom
Sarah, from Summersville, graduated from her high school in June 2023 and enlisted soon after, working as a MP with excellence, as stated by the state guard.
“She had a lot of compassion and she absolutely had bravery,” he addressed the audience at the vigil. “Though her time lasted far too short, she has left a mark that’s going to endure.”
