Forecasters have indicated a chilly start to the new year, with wintry precipitation likely throughout a lot of the UK. Celebrants have been told to wrap up as near-freezing temperatures are predicted for New Year's Eve.

Celebratory Events Continue Amid Forecasts

The Scottish capital's renowned Hogmanay events are set to take place, a contrast to last year's cancellation. This comes despite advisories for snow in northern Scotland.

"A chilly New Year's Eve night for those who are celebrating, so extra layers will be necessary," said the weather service.

Celebrations Under Open but Frosty Skies

Elsewhere in the UK, the weather is likely to be ideal for fireworks celebrations, with dry conditions and good visibility. Temperatures are due to be low, meaning warm wraps a necessity, said forecasters.

In more northern areas, skies will be cloudier, but this is not expected to hamper visibility for seeing fireworks. "There is no expectation of low cloud, mist or murk, so you will likely be able to see fireworks, just not stars," remarked one forecaster.

Broad Advisories for Friday

Heading into Friday, weather warnings are active across Northern Ireland and extending from Wales, through the north-west, the West Midlands and through to London and the majority of the south-east of England.

• Travelers are advised to plan for delays for travel on the road.
• Delays and cancellations are anticipated on public transport.

Readings Set to Drop Further

As 2026 begins, it will be "cold regardless of where you are," commented forecaster Simon Partridge. Temperatures are forecast to plummet as snow and gale-force winds are likely to affect the north of the country.

Approximately 10cm of snow is forecast to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, with up to 30cm on the most elevated routes and peaks.

Health Alerts Activated

Meanwhile, serious cold weather health warnings are in force for the north-east and north-west of England. These are expected to stay active until noon on 5 January, with the mercury likely to fall to between 3C and 5C.

Authorities stated this indicated the weather was expected to lead to major effects across health and social care services. This includes a expected uptick in the number of deaths among the elderly or unwell or those aged 65 or over.

The message for all is clear: to see the new year in safely, wrapping up warm is utterly key.
