Jets Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After New York City Shooting
New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and feels certain the player will be OK after suffering a gunshot wound in midtown Manhattan in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn shared that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “upbeat” during their recent conversation.
“That’s what eases my mind, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His family, they are holding up and he will walk away from this just fine.”
It remained unclear when Boyd might be released the medical facility, where he has been listed as critical but stable.
“Still unsure,” he added. “However, I can share, hearing him speak, he felt really upbeat. And again, that’s what gives me comfort, given his positive frame of mind and he expresses himself so positively.”
New York police issued video stills Monday of a man sought in the shooting of Boyd. The reason behind the incident is still being looked into and authorities said it is unknown if Boyd was targeted. There were no additional victims as confirmed by officials.
The shooting happened in the early morning on Sunday near MSG and the iconic square. Boyd, in his late twenties, was taken to a medical center after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, police said. The assailant escaped.
Glenn said Boyd has been on his mind “a ton” since learning of the incident. The coach said that Boyd and his wife recently welcomed a baby.
“What immediately crossed my mind, he just had a kid,” Glenn noted. “My mind went to his family, considering his child and I hope he recovers fully. That was my main concern.
“There is a procedure involved, that I won’t detail, but I’m happy at the fact that his outcome looks very positive.”
Boyd hasn’t played this season, his first with the Jets, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on 18 August with a shoulder issue that involved surgical repair.
Boyd came to New York as an unrestricted free agent in spring and was expected to be a key part of an improved special teams group under Glenn and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during preseason drills on early August and was taken away on a cart.
Boyd has stayed involved with the squad during the entire campaign while working his way back.
“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn stated. “Certainly, he attends every game. He is completely involved. Given his status as a special teams standout, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”
Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, began his career with Minnesota after being a seventh-round pick by Minnesota out of UT in the 2019 draft. He signed with Arizona in 2023 and then joined Houston’s practice squad later that season. Boyd signed a one-year contract valued at $1.6 million with New York in March.
