Israelis have come together across the country to commemorate two years since the Hamas-initiated attack on 7 October 2023, as negotiations continued in the neighboring country over an end to the hostilities in the Gaza Strip.

The incident led to in excess of 1,200 people killed and 251 others abducted away to Gaza as captives. It was the uniquely deadliest day for Jewish people since the Second World War.

Israel reacted by initiating a armed campaign in Gaza which has claimed over 67,000 people, as reported by the territory's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its numbers are considered trustworthy by the United Nations and other global organizations.

"Our bloodthirsty adversaries have hit us hard, but they have not broken us," the leader stated on Tuesday.

He also pledged to "realize all the objectives of the war: the homecoming of all the abducted, the removal of the Hamas regime and the promise that Gaza will never again create a danger to Israel".

Commemorative Ceremonies Across Israel

The Israeli government rescheduled state memorials until mid-October - after the end of the Jewish High Holiday season - but ceremonies still were held around the country on that day.

A memorial ceremony for the families of people who died in the Hamas attack was conducted in the coastal city. Arranged by the victims' relatives, it was aired on Israeli broadcast stations.

Some time earlier, a minute's silence was observed around the country.

Peace Discussions in Egypt

At the same time, the conflicting parties' delegations met in the Egyptian tourist destination of the Egyptian city for a continuing round of mediated discussions to discuss the provisions of the proposal.

A senior Palestinian official familiar with the discussions revealed that an night meeting of negotiations commenced at evening in Egypt.

The official said the earlier meeting finished without tangible results, amid conflicting views over the suggested Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over assurances Hamas wants to make certain Israel does not resume fighting after the opening period of the arrangement.

He commented that the negotiations are "challenging and have not yet achieve any real breakthrough," but mentioned that mediators are making efforts to close the gaps between the both parties.

Critical Matters in Discussions

  • An enduring ceasefire
  • The trade of the hostages still held by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
  • The withdrawal of military personnel from Gaza
  • Arrangements for assistance distribution
  • Future governance of the area

Civilian Reaction

In the city's public square earlier, 29-year-old Hagar - whose family member survived the attack on the Nova music festival, where hundreds were lost their lives and many more were abducted by Hamas fighters - shared: "No place appears as home anymore and until all the hostages come back none of us will feel safe."

"Once we see everybody home again, we can breathe once more. Then we can commence rebuild," she continued.

Near Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's official dwelling in Jerusalem, people assembled to show their solidarity for the families of the captives. Israel states nearly fifty remain in captivity in Gaza, 20 of whom are thought to be surviving.

Demonstrator a participant stated: "We need do any agreement required for the hostages to return. But we truly desire assurances that we will be safe."

Surveys now consistently show that about 70% of Israeli citizens prefer the conflict to finish in return for the freedom of the hostages.

Palestinian Situation

At the site of the music event, those paying respects assembled to pay their respects.

From that location, the sound of Israeli air strikes and shelling could be detected just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where witnesses reported the severe Israeli bombardment carried on.

In Gaza City, attacks were documented in the morning of Tuesday in the western district, area and Nasr neighbourhoods and in the east side area of the community, as well the camp to the northwest.

"When the night comes, the dread comes with it," displaced Gaza City resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose 17-year-old son was killed by an Israeli air strike previously, explained.

"My family are terrified of the bombings. Throughout the evening we are sleeping together, clinging, notably my youngest child who rests his head on me throughout the night."

"Continuously we check the reports to see developments. And I'm worried that this halt will not be completed and that the war will return to us."

Medical Emergency

The medical facility in Gaza City said it had taken in the corpses of six people by the midday, including several who lost their lives in an Israeli strike in the south part al-Sabra neighbourhood.

Another medical facility in the southern urban center of that area indicated another two fatalities had been transported. A person was died by Israeli troops while attempting to get assistance to the south region, medics said.
