European Union Finance Leaders Gather to Discuss Unlocking €140 Billion in Frozen Moscow's Funds for Ukraine Funding

EU finance ministers are gathering in the EU capital this Thursday to address the bloc's financial agenda, featuring the increasingly urgent question of funding for the Ukrainian government.

Ukraine's President Warns Nation's Existence Depends on Partners

Kyiv's leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy declared in a recent discussion that Ukraine's existence relied on receiving more funds from international partners.

“We trust, with luck, they will approve this decision,” he told media outlets. If not, “We will have to find an alternative, it concerns our survival. That’s why it is essential urgently. We rely on partners.”

European Authorities Advocates €140bn Compensation Funding

The European Commission still hopes to convince member states – and Belgium, which continues to bloc the proposal due to juridical concerns – to proceed with a €140bn financial compensation based on Moscow's immobilized funds.

EU chief Ursula von der Leyen emphasized today that it would be “the optimal method to support Ukraine’s defence and national finances.”

Decision Postponed Till Year-End Summit

A final decision on the matter has been deferred till the EU leaders’s summit in December, as the financial support needed at the start of the coming year.

Discussions Coincide with Corruption Scandal in Kyiv

But these discussions are happening during a difficult moment for Kyiv, as Zelenskyy was forced to address growing public outrage in the country over a corruption scandal in the power industry, firing several officials who are accused of involvement in a extensive corruption network.

Denmark's finance leader Stephanie Lose was questioned on her response to the allegations, and affirmed that there was commitment to continue supporting the Ukrainian people.

“Naturally, Ukraine will have to persistently focus with reforms, strengthening all parts of the nation [and] including fighting graft … but it is clear that Europe stands firmly behind Ukraine,” she stated.

Other EU Developments Under Watch

In other news, observers will be monitoring Holland where the legislature convenes to examine potential ways ahead in the coalition talks, Rome-Tirana discussions in Rome offering the latest chance to enjoy the brilliant Meloni-Rama dynamics, and a number of high-level conferences across Europe, including Nato’s Mark Rutte’s visit to a German airbase.

Lots for us to report on.
