Coach Emma Coates Departs the Young Lionesses Role to Take Helm at NWSL's Bay FC
In a significant career move, Emma Coates has stepped down from the England WU23 national team to be appointed head coach for NWSL franchise Bay FC.
Transition Stateside
Her appointment follows the departure of Albertin Montoya, who led the California club during its debut two seasons in the top-flight American league. Montoya had revealed in September his intention to depart at the conclusion of the 2025 campaign, a season which saw Bay FC end up 13th in the league standings.
âI have thoroughly enjoyed my time with the FA,â commented Coates. âThe experience has been formative both on and off the pitch. I am now prepared and eager to test my abilities in a different setting.â
Track Record of Success
During her tenure in 2023, Coates oversaw the England U23s through matches including a 1-0 victory over Norway in the European U23 League and a high-scoring loss to the United States. Accompanying her to the United States is her former Lionesses staff member, Gemma Davies, a ex- Aston Villa manager in the WSL.
Kay Cossington, a former FA womenâs technical director, highlighted Coates's qualifications: âCoates is an outstanding tactician, but she also has a proven track record of elevating athletes to thrive domestically and internationally.â
âHer leadership qualities are exceptional of squads and building ethos and has the football vision we were seeking,â added Cossington.
Bay FC's Journey
The club had a rollercoaster start to its NWSL existence, securing a playoff spot and losing in the playoffs in its first year before slipping to a 13th-place finish in 2025.
The new FA womenâs technical director, Gavin Step, bid farewell to the departing duo: âWe thank Emma and Gemma for their time with us and extend our best wishes with their venture abroad. They have played a pivotal part in bolstering the progression route between the young Lionesses and the first team.â
âTogether, they have directly impacted the development of many young players who have progressed into senior Lionesses,â Step concluded.
Pathway Success
Since taking over Mo Marley in 2023, Coates presided over the promotion of a number of players to the Lionesses squad, including midfielder Lucia Kendallâwho netted her first Lionesses goalâand attackers Michelle Agyemang and Aggie Beever-Jones.
Discussions for new U23 coaching staff is now underway, with the aim to continue the progress of the WU23 program in the future.
