British Designer Antony Price, Renowned for Styling Bowie and Duran Duran, Dies at 80.
The British designer Antony Price, the visionary British fashion designer who crafted some of the most iconic looks worn by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has passed away aged 80.
He was celebrated for his architectural shapes and dramatic aesthetics, including the soft-colored suits that featured in the iconic band Duran Duran's classic music video for "their hit Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message on social media."
His passing follows just weeks after he debuted his newest line in London, his first in more than 30 years. The performer Lily Allen walked in a dress inspired by the notorious black velvet "revenge dress" historically worn by Princess Diana.
An Enduring Influence
A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price headed for London at the start of the 1960s to attend the renowned Royal College of Art.
Shortly after his graduation, he commenced his career designing clothing for men at the label Stirling Copper and was responsible for the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that rock legend Mick Jagger famously wore during the band's Gimme Shelter tour in the late sixties.
He launched his own brand in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show was launched by outfits on model Jerry Hall, who later wore the marriage dress Price created for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.
Partnerships with Stars
A key creative partner of David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the distinctive jacket the artist wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His trademark skill to fuse menswear and womenswear along with his masterful technique in designing sculptural silhouettes established him as a "true original," according to the UK's fashion authority.
In the 1990s, he began working on outfits for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, such as various looks for her US tour following her marriage.
Following a profession lasting over fifty years, Price staged what would be his last show in London last month in conjunction with the label 16Arlington.

Design circles says farewell to a authentic original whose impact on the visual landscape of music remains indelibly etched.
