Adult Swim's Top New Show of This Year Secures a Significant Extension for Seasons 2 and 3.
During the fall season, the late-night programming block welcomed back its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. But, shortly thereafter, the channel unveiled a completely new animated series with a distinctly unique tone. Haha, You Clowns proved to be sweet and soothing, in the spirit of a cartoon version of a contemplative talk show. At a time often characterized by dark humor, this show's sincerity struck a chord and helped it become a breakout hit.
A Two-Season Greenlight
On December 18th, Adult Swim revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for a further two seasons. This offers showrunner Joe Cappa ample opportunity to expand upon the world of the Campbell family. The show focuses on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose primary trait is their strong bond for their widowed father, with Cappa voicing for all four key characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the fans of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and shared it with others," remarked Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for seasons to come."
Executive Acclaim
Accompanying the news commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and oddly captivating." He thanked the fans who embraced the show and supported its uniquely offbeat sensibility.
"All of you showed up for this new show, rooted for it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Different Kind of Comedy
When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a gentle counterpart" to other adult animated fare. Viewers found something unexpectedly cozy about watching this charming family go about their daily lives.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa stated his desire to move the comedy genre beyond its long-running layer of irony. He traced this trend to a broader media landscape.
“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we are trapped in,” said Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we just have to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
Future Seasons
Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa has the opportunity to help usher in that change he described. If nothing else, the renewal ensures audiences a little more time to bask in the gentle humor of the beloved Campbell clan.
The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The complete first season is ready to watch on HBO Max.
